Egypt inflation rates fluctuate amid rising food and vegetable prices
Egypt’s annual urban inflation rate showed fluctuations in September 2026, with reports from the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) indicating an annual rate between 12.8% and 13.9%. Despite the annual easing, monthly inflation saw an acceleration driven largely by rising food costs. Specifically, vegetable prices saw a significant monthly increase of 15.1%.
Market data shows varied pricing for essential goods. Vegetable prices have seen shifts, with white onions and potatoes seeing increases, while beans and cucumbers experienced decreases. Fruit prices also rose by approximately 2.6%. In the bakery sector, the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade continues to enforce price and weight controls for tourist bread and fino bread to protect consumers from excessive costs.
Other essential sectors also reported price changes, including a 2.5% rise in meat and poultry, and increases in housing, utilities, and transportation costs. These shifts come following the Central Bank of Egypt’s decision to maintain key interest rates in late September.
