Egypt holds talks with Oman and Pakistan to reduce regional tensions

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held high-level telephone consultations with his counterparts in Oman and Pakistan on October 18, 2026, to discuss regional de-escalation and stability.

In discussions with Pakistani Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Abdelatty emphasized the importance of the Quad Regional Mechanism—comprising Egypt, Pakistan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia—to foster security. Both ministers called for the resumption of diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Iran to resolve ongoing crises. Abdelatty also reiterated Egypt's stance against any threats to the security of Gulf nations and rejected the use of maritime straits as tools for political pressure.

During a separate call with Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, the ministers addressed regional developments and ways to strengthen bilateral relations between Cairo and Muscat. They agreed on the necessity of coordinated efforts with international and regional actors to prioritize political and diplomatic solutions.

These diplomatic efforts occur amid heightened regional tensions following the failure to implement the 'Islamabad Memorandum' signed by the U.S. and Iran in June 2026. The memorandum aimed to halt military operations and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but implementation has stalled due to disputes over maritime navigation. Additionally, the region faces ongoing military escalation between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi group in Yemen.
