Egypt hosts International Rice Innovation Workshop 2026

The Sakhra Agricultural Research Station in Kafr El-Sheikh hosted the International Rice Innovation Workshop 2026. Under the theme ‘40 Years of Excellence – The Future of Rice and Food Security,’ the event brought together scientists, experts, and representatives from international and regional research and development institutions.

Dr. Megahed Ammar, Director of the Field Crops Research Institute, highlighted rice as a strategic crop for Egypt, essential for food security and the agricultural economy. He noted that Egypt has achieved significant advancements in rice research, including the development of new varieties, hybrids, and improved seed production. Egypt currently reports a rice productivity of approximately 10 tons per hectare, which is among the highest levels globally.

Egypt expressed its readiness to transfer its expertise in rice production to friendly nations, particularly in Africa, through training, capacity building, and technology transfer. Discussions also included strengthening partnerships with AfricaRice and exploring the possibility of hosting a scientific center of excellence or a representative office for AfricaRice within Egypt to foster sustainable agricultural development.
