Egypt Importers Committee calls for lower profit margins to ease rising costs

Matta Bishay, head of the Internal Trade Committee at the Importers Division of the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce, has called for a reduction in profit margins to alleviate the economic burden on Egyptian households.

Bishay noted that the rising value of the US dollar has increased the cost of importing raw materials, production supplies, and finished goods, which in turn raises operating, manufacturing, and transport costs. He emphasized that while these costs impact the market, price increases passed to consumers must be carefully managed to respect citizens' purchasing power.

Describing the current situation as a “crisis economy,” Bishay suggested that reducing profit margins is a responsible measure that could boost sales volume and compensate for decreased purchasing power through higher turnover. He also recommended reviewing supply chains to reduce unnecessary costs, limiting the number of intermediaries, and improving the efficiency of transport, distribution, and storage to ensure products reach consumers at the lowest possible cost.
