Egypt-Japan Schools introduce Japanese language classes
Japanese-language classes have been introduced for junior high and high school students at select ‘Egypt-Japan Schools’ across Egypt. The curriculum began at the start of the recent school year, following a 2016 agreement between Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi and former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
In addition to language instruction, these schools incorporate Japanese educational practices, such as student duty rotations and classroom cleaning. Japanese is taught as a second foreign language, following English. Approximately 400 students across 10 schools are currently enrolled in these classes.
The Japan Foundation has provided support for training Egyptian teachers to lead these lessons. School officials noted a strong demand for this type of education in regional cities, with the goal of fostering cultural exchange and preparing students for roles on the global stage.
