Egypt launches 'Child SIM' service to protect children online

On 1 July 2026, Egypt's National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority officially activated a new "Child SIM" service aimed at improving digital safety for minors.

The service, announced by Deputy Head Mohamed Ibrahim, is offered by all four Egyptian telecom operators. It can be enabled on an existing child’s phone line without changing the SIM card or phone number.

Parents choose between two protection tiers – “Secure”, which blocks unsuitable websites, apps and games, and “Secure for Others”, which adds restrictions on social‑media applications. Activation is possible through carrier apps or at official branches, and the service is provided free during an initial trial period, after which operators may consider a monthly fee.

The programme seeks to limit exposure to harmful or inappropriate online content and to give families tools to monitor children’s internet use.
