Egypt launches drug awareness and testing campaigns for students and drivers
The Fund for Combating and Treating Addiction and Substance Abuse in Egypt has launched several initiatives at the start of the 2026/2027 academic year to address drug use among students and transport workers.
In universities, “Volunteer Houses” have opened to raise awareness among students regarding the dangers of narcotics. These centers aim to correct misconceptions—such as the false belief that drugs improve focus or memory—and provide information on the free, confidential services available via the 16023 hotline. The program also encourages student participation in a volunteer network that currently exceeds 36,000 members.
Simultaneously, the Fund is conducting drug testing campaigns targeting school bus drivers to ensure student safety. During the first week of the school year, 915 drivers were tested, resulting in three positive cases for hashish and heroin. Those individuals have been referred to the Public Prosecution, and coordination with the Ministry of Education is underway to facilitate their dismissal from school service. While the positive test rate has decreased from 0.68% to 0.33% compared to the previous year, authorities continue to monitor drivers to prevent incidents of driving under the influence.
