Egypt launches eight logistics corridors to boost maritime trade

Egypt has launched eight integrated international logistics corridors designed to link Red Sea and Mediterranean seaports with the Suez Canal, dry ports, and various industrial, agricultural, and mining zones. Announced by Minister of Transport Kamel Al-Wazir, these corridors—including routes such as Arish–Taba, Sokhna–Alexandria, and Cairo–Aswan–Abu Simbel—utilize railways, highways, and an electric high-speed rail network to connect Egypt to markets in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Levant, and the Gulf.

The initiative aims to reduce cargo handling times and logistics costs while transforming Egyptian ports into integrated logistics hubs. The maritime development plan includes establishing five new ports to increase the total number of commercial ports to 19 and expanding port areas to 100 million square meters. Infrastructure upgrades involve adding 70 kilometers of new berths and constructing 35 kilometers of breakwaters.

In 2025, Egyptian ports handled 233 million tonnes of cargo, a 12% increase from the previous year, while container throughput rose by 25% to 11.1 million TEUs. Egypt has already improved its global position in the UNCTAD Liner Shipping Connectivity Index from 23rd in 2024 to 19th in 2025, with a strategic goal to reach the world’s top 15 maritime rankings by 2030.
