Egypt Leads African Startup Funding Surge as New $58M Seed Fund Targets Underserved Markets
Data for the first half of 2026 shows Egypt becoming the leading destination for venture‑capital investment in African startups, attracting $327 million in equity and debt financing. Nigeria followed with $254 million, Kenya with $126 million and South Africa with $83 million, together accounting for 58 % of total continental funding. The figure for Egypt is the highest ever recorded, while a single pan‑African mobility and clean‑energy firm, Spiro, raised an amount equal to Egypt’s total.
At the same time, Digital Africa announced a new $58 million seed‑fund aimed at early‑stage technology companies in underserved African markets, expanding investor focus beyond the traditional hubs of Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa. GrowthLabs’ acquisition of Startup Gate strengthens its presence in Egypt and Tunisia, and Tunisian tech firm Eyst Technology secured fresh capital from 216 Capital Ventures, underscoring growing confidence in North‑African startup ecosystems.
