Egypt Leads Cairo Talks on Horn of Africa and Red Sea Security

A series of diplomatic consultations was held in Cairo with representatives from Egypt, Somalia, Eritrea and a senior U.S. envoy. The talks aimed to coordinate approaches to security challenges across the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, a region where shipping lanes remain under pressure.

Participants discussed Ethiopia’s expanding maritime ambitions, which are reshaping regional politics and prompting Egypt to view its interests beyond the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam dispute. Egypt now sees the Red Sea as an extension of its broader security environment, vital for trade, maritime access and the strategic Suez Canal.

Somalia’s location near the Bab el‑Mandeb Strait was highlighted as a key factor in regional stability, while the meetings signalled a shared interest among the actors to align diplomatic and security strategies amid growing uncertainty.
