Egypt maintains WHO Gold Tier status for Hepatitis C elimination

Egypt has become the first country in the world to maintain the World Health Organization (WHO) Gold Tier status on the path toward eliminating Hepatitis C. The validation follows a review of Egypt’s achievements between 2023 and 2025, confirming that the nation has met the necessary requirements to sustain this high-level recognition.

This milestone builds upon the ‘100 Million Healthy Lives’ campaign, which screened over 60 million people and provided free treatment to approximately 4.5 million patients using locally produced medications. The prevalence of Hepatitis C in Egypt has seen a significant decline, dropping from approximately 10 percent to less than 0.38 percent over the last decade.

According to the WHO, Egypt has successfully transitioned from large-scale, campaign-based screening to a sustainable, integrated health system approach. This strategy focuses on routine case finding, diagnosis, treatment, surveillance, and prevention. The nation’s ongoing efforts are supported by the 2025–2030 National Sustainability Plan for Viral Hepatitis, which aims to integrate these services into primary healthcare and universal health coverage.
