Egypt: Man with mental health issues arrested after church fire in Giza
Egyptian authorities have arrested a man suffering from mental health disorders following a partial fire at the Virgin Mary Church in the Kerdasa district of Giza.
The Ministry of Interior reported that the individual entered the church and set fire to several curtains and a carpet on the first floor. Security footage showed the suspect entering with a plastic bottle containing a white substance. Investigations revealed that the man's mental instability is linked to 'ice' drug addiction, and he had previously been admitted to a psychiatric facility.
The Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Central Giza stated that the individual entered the premises at approximately 6:00 AM under the pretext of praying, carrying a bottle of gasoline hidden in a bag. While the fire caused damage to carpets and decorations, no human casualties or injuries were reported. The case has been referred to the Public Prosecution for further investigation.
