Egypt Ministry of Education issues new primary school grading and attendance rules

Egypt's Minister of Education and Technical Education, Mohamed Abdel Latif, has issued a ministerial decree outlining new assessment and attendance regulations for primary school students from grades one to six.

Under the new grading system, each subject is evaluated out of 100 points. The distribution includes 60 points for the end-of-term exam, 15 points for monthly tests (split into two separate monthly assessments), 10 points for weekly assessments, 5 points for homework, 5 points for classwork, and 5 points for attendance and behavior. To pass a subject, students must achieve at least 30% of the second-term exam score.

Additionally, a minimum attendance rate of 70% across both semesters is now a mandatory requirement for promotion to the next grade. Students who fail to meet this attendance threshold, even if they pass their academic courses, must complete a supervised remedial program at the end of the year to be eligible for promotion. Students who receive a grade below passing level will undergo a second-round exam; failure to improve during this period will result in repeating the academic year.
