Egypt Ministry of Education issues teacher filming restrictions

New directives from the Egyptian Ministry of Education regarding the filming of teachers within schools may result in students facing a one-year suspension. This penalty applies if the filming is intended for bullying, defamation, or social media distribution.

Dr. Assem Abdel Majeed Hegazy, a professor of educational psychology at Cairo University, noted that these measures aim to protect the dignity and professional prestige of teachers. He highlighted that the decision could help curb cyberbullying, restore school discipline, and regulate mobile phone usage, particularly against the trend of filming classroom incidents for social media popularity.

However, Hegazy cautioned that authorities must distinguish between malicious filming and filming intended to document actual misconduct or abuse. He emphasized the necessity of thorough investigations before imposing suspensions and the importance of providing clear grievance procedures to mitigate the psychological and educational impact on students. He concluded that a balance must be maintained to protect teachers without preventing students from documenting genuine instances of abuse.
