Egypt Ministry of Supply updates bakery regulations and extends summer sales

Egypt's Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, Dr. Sherif Farouk, has issued new regulations regarding the management and transfer of municipal bakeries and food supply outlets. The new decree removes previous restrictions that prohibited the transfer of supply activities to relatives up to the fourth degree, or to individuals with relatives working within the Ministry of Supply. This move aims to increase flexibility for business owners while maintaining regulatory oversight.

To ensure accountability, the decree mandates that any transfer or management change requires a license from the relevant directorate and a notarized contract. Additionally, all financial accounts with the General Authority for Supply Commodities must be settled before any transfer or appointment of a new manager can proceed. Candidates for management roles must be of full legal capacity and possess a clean criminal record.

In a separate decision, Minister Farouk has extended the second seasonal liquidation period, known as the ‘summer sale,’ until September 30, 2026. This extension is intended to assist citizens with rising costs ahead of the new school year. Participating retailers must clearly display original prices alongside discounted prices to ensure transparency and prevent fraudulent claims regarding discounts.
