Egypt authorizes military support for Saudi Arabia FAST-MOVING

The Egyptian House of Representatives has authorized President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to take necessary measures to provide military support to Saudi Arabia. The decision, passed with a two-thirds majority during closed-door sessions, aims to defend the kingdom’s territory, sovereignty, and holy sites against external aggression, specifically following intensified missile and drone attacks by Iran-aligned Houthi rebels from Yemen.

President al-Sisi clarified that any Egyptian military action would be strictly defensive and limited to protecting Saudi borders, explicitly excluding offensive operations or attacks within Yemen. While the exact nature of the assistance has not been officially detailed, regional officials indicate that support may include the deployment of aircraft and air defense systems to repel incoming threats. The authorization does not include the deployment of Egyptian ground troops to Yemen.

The move comes amid heightened regional tensions and threats to the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital gateway to the Suez Canal. While Egypt has previously participated in the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen through naval and limited ground support, this mandate provides a formal legal framework for coordinated defensive action should Riyadh request assistance.
