Egypt partners with SANY Renewable Energy for wind project

Egypt has entered into an agreement with China’s SANY Renewable Energy to develop a 2,000-megawatt wind project in the Gulf of Suez. This initiative includes the establishment of Egypt’s first wind turbine manufacturing plant, which is intended to supply the domestic market and potentially export equipment to the Middle East and Africa.

The project is expected to connect to the national grid within 23 months of final agreements. Experts suggest that Egypt’s focus on local manufacturing, technology transfer, and economies of scale could serve as a model for other African nations attempting to transition from importing equipment to building domestic industrial capacity for renewable energy.

Fadhel Kaboub, an associate professor of economics at Denison University, noted the contrast between this rapid development and other regional efforts, such as a wind farm project in Nigeria that took nearly two decades to become operational. While the Egyptian project is in its early stages, its scale and partnership with Chinese technology may improve its ability to attract investment and achieve timely completion.
