Egypt and Rosatom discuss desalination and nuclear technology cooperation
During an official visit to Russia, Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat met with Rosatom leadership to advance several strategic energy and industrial projects.
A primary focus of the discussions was a proposed large-capacity seawater desalination plant at the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant site. Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev stated that talks regarding the project's timeline, financing, and organizational model are in a practical stage. The facility, which would utilize reverse osmosis technology, is intended to supply water to the nuclear plant and the surrounding Dabaa region to support urban and industrial expansion. Egypt aims to localize the manufacturing of desalination equipment and explore the commercial use of salts and minerals extracted during the process.
Additionally, the two nations discussed expanding cooperation in advanced technologies. This includes the potential localization of Rosatom's 3D printing capabilities in Egypt to support the engineering and energy sectors, as well as exploring the implementation of small nuclear reactor technologies to diversify Egypt's energy mix.
