Egypt builds legal case against Turkey-Libya maritime deal

Egypt is preparing a comprehensive legal dossier with international law experts to challenge the 2019 maritime delimitation memorandum between Turkey and Libya. This move follows the ratification of the agreement by Libya’s eastern-based House of Representatives on October 20.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty informed his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, in Istanbul that Egypt considers the memorandum “absolutely null and void,” asserting it infringes upon Egypt’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf. Egypt is coordinating its response with Cyprus, Greece, and the European Union.

The United States has described the ratification as “useless and provocative,” urging all parties in the Eastern Mediterranean to resolve maritime disputes through good-faith negotiations. While Turkey and Libya seek to solidify maritime claims, Egypt is exploring legal avenues to potentially halt drilling and exploration activities in disputed areas.
