Egypt prepares troop deployment to Somalia amid regional tensions

Egypt is preparing to deploy military troops to Somalia, marking a significant expansion of security cooperation between Cairo and Mogadishu. Egyptian military technical teams, including advisers, trainers, and officers, are reportedly making arrangements for the deployment in the Ceelcade area, near the former Cisiley Airfield in the Middle Shabelle region. This location is situated north of Mogadishu and approximately 400 kilometers from the Ethiopian border.

The deployment is expected to occur under a bilateral military cooperation framework established by a 2024 agreement and may also function within the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). While Egypt has not officially disclosed the size of the contingent or a specific timetable, recent high-level meetings have occurred between Egyptian officers and Somali commanders to discuss strengthening the Somali National Army.

This move follows the elevation of relations between Egypt and Somalia to a strategic partnership in early 2025. Analysts suggest the deployment arrives at a critical time for stability in the Horn of Africa, though the success of the mission will depend on coordination with Somali institutions and respect for national sovereignty.
