Egypt President Al‑Sisi reviews food security and subsidy reforms
President Abdel Fattah Al‑Sisi met with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and senior ministers in El Alamein to assess Egypt’s food‑security system. Officials reported that strategic commodity stocks, including grain reserves, remain at “very reassuring” levels, with some items covering up to a year of domestic demand. The review covered the Mostaqbal Misr grain‑silo complex, which is expected to boost storage capacity and distribution efficiency.
The president also examined reforms to the social‑protection framework, focusing on the Takaful and Karama cash‑transfer programme and a proposed commodity‑based cash‑support scheme intended to improve subsidy targeting. Discussions included upgrades to the ration‑card system, the subsidised bread programme and plans to establish 300 strategic bakeries nationwide. The National Food Safety Authority’s role in monitoring food quality was also reviewed.
