Egypt raises residential electricity tariffs and cracks down on theft

The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity announced new residential electricity tariffs for 2026. The first slab (0‑50 kWh) remains at 0.68 EGP per kWh, while rates for higher consumption levels rise, with the second slab (51‑100 kWh) increasing to 0.8736 EGP, the third (101‑200 kWh) to 1.064 EGP, and the highest slab (over 1,000 kWh) to 2.89 EGP per kWh. The ministry also provided online steps for consumers to view and pay bills via the national electricity portal, mobile app, banks, and payment services.

In parallel, the ministry launched an advanced detection system to combat electricity theft, detailing numerous illegal practices such as direct connections, tampering with meters, and use of hidden switches. Offenders face criminal prosecution, disconnection of service, and fines up to 2 million EGP. The price hikes are justified by rising fuel costs, operating expenses, and the need to fund network upgrades and renewable‑energy projects.
