Egypt reaches World Cup 2026 last‑16 for first time

Egypt secured a historic place in the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, winning a penalty shoot‑out 4‑2 after a 1‑1 draw with Australia in a match played in Canada. The victory ends a 92‑year wait since the Pharaohs last reached this stage in 1934.

The win leaves Africa with two representatives – Egypt and Morocco – in the knockout phase, while seven other African teams, including Algeria and Ghana, were eliminated in the round of 16. The tournament also saw Cape Verde push the defending champions Argentina to extra time before losing 3‑2.

The performances have revived hopes for African football and sparked discussion about visa restrictions that may have affected African supporters travelling to the United States, one of the three host nations.
