Egypt reaches World Cup round of 16 for the first time

Egypt's national football team qualified for the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup after a 4‑2 penalty shoot‑out win over Australia following a 1‑1 draw in Dallas, Texas. The match marked the first time Egypt advanced to this stage in World Cup history. Mohamed Salah, who scored the decisive penalty, was named man of the match.

Coach Hossam Hassan praised Salah’s contribution, saying he felt “like he was dreaming” after the historic achievement, and confirmed that Egypt will face either Argentina or Cape Verde in the next round. The victory came after Egypt finished second in Group 7 with five points, having also beaten New Zealand and drawn with Belgium and Iran.
