Egypt Red Sea resorts report whale shark sightings and mask bans

Tourism in Egypt’s Red Sea resorts, specifically Hurghada and Marsa Alam, is seeing a surge in whale shark sightings. These massive filter-feeders, which can exceed ten meters in length, have been spotted near Giftun Island and the Three Corners area. While the sharks are considered harmless to humans, authorities advise tourists to maintain distance and avoid feeding or touching them to protect the endangered species.

Simultaneously, safety regulations are being implemented at certain Egyptian beach locations. At the JAZ Lamaya resort in Marsa Alam, full-face snorkeling masks have been banned due to significant respiratory risks. Officials cite concerns regarding breathing difficulties, carbon dioxide buildup, and the inability to remove the masks quickly in an emergency. These warnings align with previous safety recommendations from consumer safety commissions regarding the potential for drowning or loss of consciousness caused by such equipment.
