Egypt and Saudi Arabia demand Red Sea maritime security

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met in Cairo to address escalating regional tensions and the threat to maritime security in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The leaders emphasized the need for unhindered navigation following a lightning offensive by Yemen's Houthi rebels, which has seen the group seize control of vital coastal areas and the strategic strait.

Egypt expressed full solidarity with Saudi Arabia's security measures and rejected Houthi attempts to coordinate maritime traffic, stating that Cairo only recognizes the legitimate Yemeni government. The disruption to Red Sea shipping has had significant economic consequences, with Egypt reporting a loss of approximately $7 billion in Suez Canal revenues between 2023 and 2024.

Furthermore, the security situation has impacted energy infrastructure. An attack on Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline, reportedly carried out by Iran-aligned militias, has forced the pipeline offline for several weeks, impacting oil transport routes that bypass the Strait of Hormuz.
