Egypt retains Africa's fastest fixed internet title for fifth year

Egypt has been recognized by Ookla with the Speedtest Award for having the fastest fixed internet in Africa. This marks the fifth consecutive year the country has held this continental title, based on speed measurements conducted during the first half of 2026.

The award was announced at the Network X 2026 conference in Vienna, Austria. Egyptian authorities stated that the achievement reflects significant investments in modernizing telecommunications networks, specifically through the expansion of fiber-optic infrastructure and increased data transmission capacity.

Mohamed Shamroukh, chief executive of Egypt’s National Telecom Regulatory Authority, accepted the award on behalf of the Minister of Communications and Information Technology. Shamroukh emphasized the need for continued investment to meet rising digital service demands and noted that independent performance assessments encourage operators to improve service quality as part of the nation's digital economic transformation.
