Egypt secures IAEA resolution for Middle East nuclear safeguards
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference has adopted a resolution proposed by Egypt to apply the agency's safeguards system to all nuclear facilities in the Middle East. The resolution received support from 112 member states, with nine abstentions and no opposing votes.
Egypt's proposal emphasizes the importance of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in maintaining international peace and security. Cairo is calling for the international community to fulfill its legal obligations and break the current deadlock regarding disarmament efforts.
Furthermore, Egypt highlighted the upcoming seventh session of the United Nations Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction, scheduled for November 2026 in New York. Egypt views this conference as a critical opportunity to encourage regional dialogue and promote the universality of the NPT to achieve a weapons-free zone in the region.
