Egypt seeks to accelerate Harmattan offshore gas field development

Egypt is seeking to accelerate the development of the offshore Harmattan gas field in the Mediterranean to address a widening domestic supply deficit. Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi has directed Pharaonic Petroleum Company to explore technical options and advanced drilling technologies to shorten the field’s development timetable.

The Harmattan project is being developed through Arcius Energy, a joint venture between bp and ADNOC’s international investment arm, XRG. The development involves an investment of approximately $500 million. While initial targets aimed for 150 million cubic feet of gas per day, the wider program envisages output rising to 200 million cubic feet per day, alongside 4,400 barrels per day of petroleum condensates.

Plans include connecting the field to the Ha’py production facilities via a 50-km pipeline, with ENPPI serving as the general contractor. This initiative comes as Egypt faces a gap between its current production of roughly 4.1 billion cubic feet per day and a domestic demand of approximately 6.2 billion cubic feet per day.
