Egypt telecom sector faces scrutiny over data usage and pricing rumors

Egyptian lawmaker Ehab Weba has called on the Minister of Communications and the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) to hold mobile operators accountable following widespread citizen complaints regarding premature internet package depletion. Weba noted that many users report their data packages running out within one to two weeks, despite no change in their typical usage patterns. He urged the NTRA to conduct technical audits of the data calculation systems used by the four major telecom companies to ensure transparency and accuracy.

In response to separate rumors circulating on social media, the NTRA has officially denied reports suggesting a 35% increase in internet and mobile service prices. Mohamed Ibrahim, executive deputy and spokesperson for the NTRA, clarified that no such official decision has been made. He emphasized that any future adjustments to service pricing would be formally announced by the authority with clear explanations of the reasons behind them.
