Egypt to integrate media literacy and critical thinking into school curricula
Dr. Thuraya Ahmed al-Badawi, Chairperson of the Culture, Media, and Antiquities Committee in the Egyptian House of Representatives, has praised the Ministry of Education and Technical Education for its response to a proposal to integrate media literacy and critical thinking skills into basic education curricula.
The initiative aims to build student awareness and protect them against rumors, misinformation, and unregulated digital content resulting from the rapid growth of social media and artificial intelligence. The implementation strategy follows two integrated tracks: the creation of specialized, progressive media literacy units and the institutional integration of critical thinking skills across various existing subjects.
Key skills to be taught include distinguishing fact from opinion, verifying information sources, detecting fake news, protecting personal data, managing digital footprints, and understanding propaganda and media bias. The skills will be integrated into subjects such as Arabic (discourse analysis), Information and Communication Technology (digital security and privacy), and Science (verifying scientific and medical claims).
