Egypt travel guide: classic Nile routes and seasonal timing

Travelers visiting Egypt frequently follow a classic route that traces the Nile from north to south, beginning in Cairo and moving through Luxor to Aswan. This itinerary is shaped by the country's geography, as most major ancient capitals, temples, and tombs are located along the riverbanks.

Cairo serves as the starting point with its pyramids and museums, while Luxor offers a high concentration of temples and tombs. The route concludes in Aswan, providing access to the Philae Temple and Abu Simbel. The journey follows a loose chronological progression from the Old Kingdom through the New Kingdom and into the Ptolemaic and Roman eras.

Weather conditions significantly impact travel planning. The most comfortable period for sightseeing is generally from October to April, with December through February offering the mildest temperatures. While Cairo and the Mediterranean coast remain relatively mild, southern locations like Luxor and Aswan experience much higher temperatures, often exceeding 40°C during the summer months.
