Egypt unveils mining sector reforms to attract global investment

Egypt's Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, has announced a series of fundamental reforms aimed at transforming the nation's mining sector into a more attractive destination for global investment. Speaking at the Africa Down Under conference in Perth, Australia, Badawi detailed efforts made over the past two years to modernize the industry's legislative framework and enhance the role of the Egyptian Mineral Resources Authority.

Key reforms include the implementation of an ‘open sector’ system, which allows investors to study and apply for mining opportunities year-round without waiting for specific auction rounds. To streamline operations, Egypt has introduced a ‘one-stop shop’ mechanism to facilitate approvals and reduce bureaucratic hurdles. Additionally, the government has implemented a new exploitation model based on royalties and taxes that aligns with international standards, alongside a package of incentives specifically designed to attract gold exploration companies, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises.
