Egypt utilizes new cities to manage population growth

Dr. Ahmed Ghoneim, a professor of sustainable development and project management at Cairo University, stated that Egypt has made significant progress in its development path, aligned with the three pillars of Egypt Vision 2030: economic, environmental, and social.

Ghoneim identified the social dimension, specifically rapid population growth, as the primary challenge to sustainable development. With an estimated annual population increase of nearly one million people, there is a growing demand for housing, schools, and essential services. To address this, the state has focused on horizontal urban expansion by constructing approximately 24 new cities to mitigate overcrowding and reduce the reliance on vertical expansion.

Furthermore, Ghoneim emphasized that sustainable development requires preserving and developing available resources—such as agricultural land and water—to ensure the well-being of future generations while simultaneously creating new resources to meet future needs.
