Egyptian dollar falls, gold prices rise and stock market posts 18 billion profit
The US dollar weakened against the Egyptian pound on August 5, 2026, with rates in most banks sliding to between 49.50 and 50.44 EGP per dollar, after an IMF mission announced a $1.8 billion disbursement.
Gold prices in Egypt edged higher: 21‑carat gold rose 25 EGP to about 5,870 EGP per gram, 24‑carat to 6,708 EGP, and the gold ounce traded around $4,050‑$4,080 globally. The modest rise was supported by a stable exchange market and widening local‑global price gaps, while global factors such as lower oil prices and a softer dollar also lifted spot gold.
The Egyptian stock market closed stronger, with the EGX30 index up 0.29 % to 54,659 points and total market capitalisation reaching roughly 4.092 trillion EGP. The exchange recorded a net profit of about 18 billion EGP for the day.
