Egyptian cinema legend Rashid Abaza commemorated on his birthday

Rashid Abaza, born on 3 August 1926 in Mansoura, Egypt, is celebrated as one of the most iconic figures of Egyptian and Arab cinema. Nicknamed the “Danjwan of the Arab screen,” he appeared in more than 150 films over three decades, working with stars such as Faten Hamama, Shadia, Soad Hosny, and Omar Sharif. Notable titles include "In Our House a Man," "The Wife 13," "Small Love," and "The Second Man."

Abaza’s career also featured attempts to break into international productions. In the 1970s he was selected as a double for Robert Taylor in the adventure film "Valley of the Kings," performing dangerous stunts and even being mistaken for the Hollywood star on set. He later received offers to work alongside English actor Jack Hawkins, though he declined a camera test that would have placed him in a supporting role.

He died on 27 July 1980 at age 53 after a battle with brain cancer. Decades after his death, his films continue to be broadcast on television and streaming platforms, and his charismatic screen presence remains a touchstone for fans of classic Egyptian cinema.
