Egyptian clubs push for expanded CAF Champions League slots

Former Egyptian international Hani Saeed said the proposal to increase the number of Egyptian clubs in CAF competitions is "a positive step" that would benefit the sport domestically. The Egyptian FA, led by Hani Abu Rida, has submitted a plan to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to raise the quota for higher‑ranked associations in the Champions League and Confederation Cup, with backing growing among CAF’s executive committee. If approved, the change could be applied from the next season, allowing clubs such as Al Ahly, Zamalek and Pyramids – already slated for the 2027 Champions League – to join more teams from Egypt, while Al Ahly might also take part in the Confederation Cup. Supporters argue the reform would boost competition, increase marketing revenues and give more clubs continental exposure. CAF’s final decision is expected at upcoming meetings.
