Al Ahly threatens to quit Egypt Cup and Super Cup over new refereeing committee

Al Ahly sent a formal letter to the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) criticizing the appointment of a new refereeing committee chaired by Essam Abdel Fattah. The club accused the committee of lacking credibility and fairness, citing a VAR decision that denied a penalty in a match against Ceramica and alleging external interference in the committee’s work. In response, Al Ahly said it may withdraw from the Egypt Cup and the Egyptian Super Cup as a protest.

The EFA replied that the new committee, which also includes Jamil Al‑Ghondour and Samir Othman, should be given a full opportunity to operate and that it remains committed to the development plan for Egyptian football. The federation also issued a statement that it had not released any official comments in recent days, urging clubs to rely only on verified communications and to support the ongoing reforms.

The dispute centers on the governance of refereeing, the enforcement of licensing and financial rules, and the broader effort to modernise Egyptian football ahead of the 2026 World Cup cycle.
