Egyptian Medical Syndicate investigates doctor over eye color changes

The Egyptian Medical Syndicate has referred an ophthalmologist to an investigation by the professional ethics committee following complaints regarding cosmetic eye color change procedures. The procedures in question include using lasers to lighten the iris or implanting colored artificial irises.

The Egyptian Ophthalmological Society has expressed total rejection of these cosmetic surgeries, noting that they have issued warnings since early 2023 regarding the severe risks involved. Such complications can include permanent vision loss. The Society noted that exceptions are only permitted in specific medical cases, such as treating a deformed cornea in a non-sighted eye, based on specialized medical assessment.

The Syndicate has urged citizens to avoid advertisements for cosmetic eye color changes due to the significant health risks and has called on physicians to adhere to scientific and ethical medical standards.
