Egyptian military leaders played pivotal roles in 1973 October War

The 1973 October War remains a defining moment in Egyptian military history, marking the reclamation of the Sinai Peninsula. Key military leaders played instrumental roles in the strategic preparation and execution of the conflict.

Field Marshal Mohamed Ali Fahmy, the founder of the Egyptian Air Defense Forces, was central to the war effort. After taking command in 1969, he focused on rebuilding the defense system following the 1967 conflict. His leadership led to the construction of the missile wall, which significantly limited Israeli aerial reconnaissance and operations over the Suez Canal front. Following the war, he served as Chief of Staff and later as a military advisor to President Anwar Sadat.

Admiral Fouad Zekri commanded the Egyptian Navy during the conflict. Tasked with supporting ground operations in Sinai and securing the coast, Zekri worked to rebuild naval capabilities after 1967. His leadership contributed to disrupting enemy maritime supply lines and securing the coastal flank during the war.
