Egyptian MP Mohamed Abdel Hafiz questions electricity price hikes

Member of Parliament Mohamed Abdel Hafiz submitted a formal question to the Egyptian Prime Minister and the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy. He warned that the recent increase in electricity tariffs, announced at the start of August during peak summer consumption, imposes an indirect tax on households and erodes the purchasing power of the middle class.

Hafiz asked the government to consider postponing the hikes until inflation stabilises, to allow factories to deduct part of their energy costs from taxes, to remove fees and restrictions on solar‑energy systems, and to establish an independent committee that would review electricity pricing based on the actual cost per kilowatt‑hour. He argued that structural reforms, not direct consumer levies, are needed to address the sector’s challenges.
