Egyptian MPs call for speedy landline rollout and capped internet prices

The parliamentary Committee on Communications and Information Technology, chaired by MP Ahmed Badawi, urged the Ministry of Communications to accelerate the completion of landline waiting lists, citing about 4,000 pending requests in the Minya governorate. The committee recommended fast‑tracking fibre‑optic extensions or suitable technical alternatives to connect underserved areas.

In the same session, the committee proposed that internet bundles for low‑income households should not exceed 150 Egyptian pounds and that access to government and educational websites be provided free of charge. MPs emphasized that internet services are now essential utilities, comparable to electricity and water, and called for swift action to improve service quality and affordability for all citizens.
