Egyptian National Theatre Festival Honors Ahmed Maher at Opening of 19th Edition

The 19th edition of the Egyptian National Theatre Festival opened on Saturday, 25 July 2026 at the large stage of the Egyptian Opera House. The ceremony, hosted by media presenter Riham Ibrahim, featured the inaugural performance titled “Travel” (سفر), designed and directed by artist Walid Auni. The show used visual imagery and movement to symbolize a journey across Egypt’s provinces, with a young couple representing the cultural diversity of the country.

Actor Ahmed Maher was among the honorees. In his acceptance speech he thanked festival president Mohamed Riyad and said, “This honor came very late, but it remains a source of appreciation and pride.” Maher also highlighted his international recognition, recalling a performance in Tunisia that was requested to be repeated. The festival, under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture, will run until 11 August and includes a competition, workshops, seminars and additional tribute events for prominent figures of Egyptian theatre.
