Egyptian Qur'an reciter Sheikh El‑Sayed Metwally commemorated

The Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs marked the death anniversary of Sheikh El‑Sayed Metwally, a leading Egyptian Qur'an reciter who died on 16 July 2015. Born on 26 April 1947 in the village of Fadadna, Eastern Province, he memorised the whole Qur'an by age twelve and later studied under renowned scholars such as Sheikh al‑Sawi and Sheikh Taha al‑Wakil.

Metwally became known as the “Dean of Arab Reciters” for his distinctive voice, long breath, and precise tajweed. He performed widely across the Arab world, Africa and Europe, broadcasting on the Qur’an Radio and recording many recitations that remain in circulation. The council highlighted his role as an ambassador of Egyptian Qur’an recitation and praised his humility and devotion.

His funeral was held in his native village, and his recordings continue to be aired during religious occasions.
