Egyptian Senator criticizes government over food security and price volatility
Jamal Abu al-Fotouh, Deputy Chair of the Agriculture Committee in the Egyptian Senate, has issued sharp criticisms against the government regarding recurring food commodity crises and rising prices. Speaking during a Senate general session, Abu al-Fotouh questioned the absence of a clear, sustainable plan to secure food supplies for Egypt's 110 million citizens.
He emphasized that food security is a fundamental pillar of Egyptian national security. The Senator highlighted market instabilities, noting fluctuations in the prices of poultry, meat, eggs, and tomatoes, which have caused difficulties for both consumers and producers. He called for stricter market oversight and a better balance between production and consumption to prevent repeated crises.
Abu al-Fotouh also warned that regional and international tensions—including conflicts in Sudan, Libya, and the Gaza Strip, as well as the Russia-Ukraine war—pose significant risks to supply chains. He urged the government to move beyond reactive measures and implement a long-term strategic plan to safeguard food availability against global and regional instability.
