Egyptian Senator warns of virtual worlds impacting national awareness

Egyptian Senator Ehab Wahba, head of the Republican People's Party parliamentary bloc in the Senate, has issued a warning regarding the rise of sophisticated virtual environments on digital platforms. He noted that trends such as ‘Bikini Bottom’—which evolved from SpongeBob-inspired humor into complex virtual worlds mimicking state institutions like police stations and ministries—represent a new way for youth to express societal issues.

Wahba emphasized that while these phenomena are largely entertainment-based, they pose a risk by creating closed digital spaces that reproduce societal problems outside of official channels. He warned that if these virtual worlds become substitutes for real-world engagement, they could gradually erode trust in state institutions.

To mitigate this, Wahba called for expanding the public sphere and revitalizing political party activity. He argued that active political parties should serve as a legitimate link between citizens and the state, providing formal channels for discussion and addressing daily grievances to prevent the spread of misinformation within closed digital groups.
