Egyptians killed in Khartoum shooting amid border tensions

Two Egyptian truck drivers were killed and a third wounded after an armed individual opened fire at a market in Khartoum, Sudan. Sudanese police reported that the suspect was arrested shortly after the incident and the weapon was recovered. The injured driver was treated at the Military Medical Corps Hospital in Omdurman and is reported to be in stable condition following surgery.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, instructed the Egyptian Ambassador to Sudan, Yasser Sorour, to coordinate with Sudanese authorities to investigate the circumstances and arrange for the repatriation of the deceased. Sudanese officials have characterized the shooting as an isolated criminal incident.

The violence occurs against a backdrop of heightened diplomatic tension following reports of deadly airstrikes on artisanal gold mining sites in the Shamal al-Wadi region near the Egypt-Sudan border on October 10. While Sudanese rights groups have reported high casualty figures from those strikes, the specific motives and circumstances surrounding the Khartoum shooting remain under investigation.
