Drone strike hits two gas vessels at Egypt's Damietta port
An unidentified drone struck two gas vessels at Egypt’s Mediterranean port of Damietta on 29 July 2026. The targets were the U.S.-owned floating storage and regasification unit Energos Winter and the Greek‑flagged LNG carrier GasLog Salem, causing fires and explosions on both ships. No injuries or fatalities were reported; emergency crews brought the blaze under control after roughly 12‑14 hours, with the fire on Energos Winter burning until about 20:00 local time.
Egypt’s authorities opened a forensic investigation, recovered drone debris, and activated contingency measures, switching power plants to fuel oil and diesel and integrating a standby regasification unit from Jordan’s Port of Aqaba to safeguard domestic gas supplies. Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly said the vessels were moved to prevent an explosion that could have devastated the port and the nearby city of Damietta, home to over 300 000 residents.
No group has claimed responsibility. Iran denied involvement and suggested the attack could be an Israeli false‑flag operation, while other regional actors, including the Houthis, also denied participation. The incident raised concerns for the security of the Suez Canal and the broader Mediterranean energy corridor, which supplies roughly 35 % of Egypt’s natural‑gas demand.
