Egypt's Financial Regulatory Authority regulates hedge funds
The Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) in Egypt has issued a new decision to regulate the establishment and operation of hedge funds for the first time. These funds are authorized to invest in equities, debt instruments, and financial derivatives, including futures, options, and short selling on the Egyptian Exchange.
The decision allows for the creation of new hedge funds and permits existing investment funds to transition into hedge fund activities under specific guidelines. According to FRA Chairman Islam Azzam, this move aims to deepen the Egyptian market, enhance investment flexibility, and stimulate the derivatives market by attracting both local and foreign investors.
To protect investors, the regulation mandates strict disclosure requirements. Investment managers must detail leverage limits, risk management policies, and potential risks such as liquidity issues and market volatility. Managers are also required to provide periodic disclosures regarding stress test results and any significant changes to investment strategies to ensure transparency.
