Egypt's Minister Manal Awad Oversees Earthquake Response

A magnitude‑5.6 earthquake struck Egypt early on 3 August 2026, detected by the National Seismic Network. The Ministry of Local Development and Environment received the alert and immediately raised the readiness level of all emergency operation rooms across the governorates.

Minister Manal Awad ordered a rapid field assessment. Dr. Saeed Helmy Abdelkhalek, head of the integrated local planning sector, reported seven incidents involving old buildings in Cairo, Beheira, Suez and Gharbia. Actions included evacuating residents from a damaged structure on Ali Al‑Janaeni Street in Cairo’s Rod Al‑Faraj district, securing a collapsed balcony in a vacant house in Hosh Isa (Beheira), and reinforcing unsafe roofs and walls in Suez and Gharbia. No injuries were reported and the ministry continued 24‑hour monitoring and coordination with local authorities.
